From its highlighter-yellow packaging accents to its sublime use of the Prizm-perfect Optichrome technology, there’s a lot to catch the eye in Panini America’s new 2016 Donruss Optic Baseball. But it’s the stuff not visible at first glance that’s sure to strike a chord with many collectors — like unannounced Hot Boxes that deliver five autographs per box instead of two or 20 numbered Optic parallels instead of three.
Full disclosure: I didn’t even know Hot Boxes existed for 2016 Donruss Optic Baseball until I got about halfway through the second and final box I opened for the Teaser Gallery that follows. That’s when I pulled the third autograph. Two packs later I pulled the fourth. One pack later I pulled the fifth. It was an under-promise, over-deliver surprise of the highest order that had me confirming things with Panini America Brand Managers Micah Layton and Tim Trout.
